About Us

As of 2001, Akhuwat's main goal has been to reduce poverty.

Akhuwat is a non-profit group that was founded in 2001. Its name comes from the Islamic concept of Mawakhat, which means unity. This idea has its roots in 622 CE, when Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) told the people of Medina (the Ansars) to share half of their wealth with the Muhajirs (migrants) who had fled oppression in Mecca and found safety in Medina.

Akhuwat was moved by the Ansars’ kindness and thinks that global inequality can be solved if today’s society follows a similar pattern, where a wealthy family helps a less fortunate one.

So, Akhuwat’s goal of making society free of poverty could not be fully realized until the real problem of illiteracy was fixed. So, Akhuwat’s dream of a society without poverty would never come true unless the root cause, illiteracy, was successfully dealt with.
